AppleCare+ vs. Apple Limited Warranty: What’s Actually Covered?

You buy a new MacBook and hear two different terms almost immediately: Apple Limited Warranty and AppleCare+. They are not the same thing.

The Apple Limited Warranty comes with your Mac and primarily protects against eligible manufacturing defects. AppleCare+ is an additional protection plan that extends hardware support and adds coverage for eligible accidental damage such as drops and spills, along with battery service and priority technical support.

Understanding the difference before something happens to your MacBook can save a lot of confusion later. Here’s what each one actually covers in 2026.

Apple Limited Warranty: What Comes With Your Mac

Every new Mac comes with Apple’s limited hardware warranty. Apple states that the warranty covers the Mac and Apple-branded accessories included in the box against manufacturing issues for one year from the date of purchase. Think of it this way: If something fails because the product itself has a covered defect, the limited warranty may apply. If you accidentally damage it, that’s a different situation.

What the Apple Limited Warranty Typically Covers

Examples of issues that may qualify include eligible defects involving:

  • Hardware components
  • Display assemblies
  • Logic boards
  • Keyboards
  • Trackpads
  • Ports
  • Other Apple hardware
  • Apple-branded accessories included with the Mac

The key phrase is: Defect in materials or workmanship. That distinction matters.

What the Apple Limited Warranty Does NOT Normally Cover

This is where people get surprised. Apple states that its limited warranty does not cover accidental damage or batteries that wear down from normal use. So if you:

  • Drop the MacBook
  • Crack the display
  • Spill coffee on it
  • Bend the enclosure
  • Damage a port physically

the standard limited warranty generally isn't designed to cover that accident.

AppleCare+: What Changes?

AppleCare+ adds protection beyond the standard warranty. Current U.S. AppleCare+ for Mac terms include coverage for:

  • Eligible hardware defects during the active plan
  • Eligible accidental damage from handling
  • Battery service when the battery qualifies
  • Priority technical support

For AppleCare+ plans purchased on or after August 25, 2026, Apple's current U.S. terms provide unlimited accidental-damage service events while the plan remains active, subject to exclusions and the applicable service fee for each repair.

That is an important change compared with some older AppleCare+ plans, which had different incident limits.

AppleCare+ Covers Accidental Damage

This is probably the biggest difference. Apple's current terms specifically include accidental damage caused by an unexpected and unintentional event, including examples such as:

  • Drops
  • Liquid spills

The damage has to affect the functionality of the covered device, and exclusions still apply. So if you drop your MacBook and crack the screen, or spill coffee into it, AppleCare+ may help dramatically reduce the cost compared with paying the full out-of-warranty repair price.

How Much Is Accidental Damage With AppleCare+?

For most current Mac models in the U.S., Apple's 2026 service fees are: Screen-only or external-enclosure-only damage: $99 plus applicable tax

Other accidental damage: $299 plus applicable tax

Apple lists a lower fee for the MacBook Neo, but other Mac models use the $99/$299 structure. To qualify for the lower screen/enclosure fee, there cannot be additional damage that prevents the repair from being treated as screen-only or enclosure-only.

Example: Cracked MacBook Screen

Let's say your MacBook slips off the couch. The screen cracks. With Apple Limited Warranty, accidental damage generally isn't covered. You may be responsible for the applicable out-of-warranty repair cost.

With AppleCare+ If the damage qualifies as screen-only accidental damage, the current U.S. service fee for most Mac models is $99 plus tax. That's a very different repair bill.

Example: Coffee Spill

Now let's say coffee gets inside the keyboard. Limited Warranty Liquid damage caused by an accident generally isn't covered by the standard warranty.

AppleCare+

Eligible accidental liquid damage is covered under AppleCare+ subject to the plan terms and exclusions. For most Macs, it generally falls into the other accidental damage category with a current U.S. service fee of $299 plus tax.

That's one of the strongest reasons many MacBook owners consider AppleCare+.

Battery Coverage Is Different Too

MacBook batteries naturally wear down. The standard limited warranty does not cover batteries simply because they have lost capacity through normal use. AppleCare+ provides additional battery protection.

Under Apple's current Mac AppleCare+ terms, hardware service is available when an integrated rechargeable battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity during the active plan.

Apple's Mac repair page also states that eligible AppleCare battery service is provided at no additional fee when capacity falls below 80%.

AppleCare+ Also Includes Technical Support

AppleCare+ isn't only about broken hardware. Apple's current terms include priority telephone and web-based technical support for covered Apple hardware and supported Apple software. Support may include help with setup, configuration, troubleshooting, recovery, and determining whether hardware service is needed.

That can be useful if you need help with:

  • macOS
  • Apple software
  • Setup
  • Connectivity
  • Troubleshooting
  • Determining whether a hardware repair is necessary

What AppleCare+ Does NOT Cover

AppleCare+ offers broad protection, but it does not cover everything. Current terms exclude certain situations including:

  • Normal cosmetic wear that doesn't affect functionality
  • Preventive maintenance
  • Lost or stolen Macs
  • Reckless, abusive, willful, or intentional damage
  • Certain excessive damage
  • Some damage caused by unauthorized modification or service
  • Data loss or data recovery

Apple specifically excludes lost or stolen covered equipment from Mac AppleCare+ service. So AppleCare+ isn't a replacement for theft insurance or a backup strategy.

AppleCare+ Does NOT Protect Your Data

This deserves its own section. AppleCare+ can protect the hardware. It does not guarantee your files. Apple's current terms exclude loss or corruption of electronic data and do not include professional data recovery. That means you should still maintain:

  • Time Machine backups
  • Appropriate cloud backups
  • External backups
  • Redundant copies of critical business data

Computers can be replaced. Your data is unique.

Apple Limited Warranty vs. AppleCare+: Quick Comparison

Coverage Apple Limited Warranty AppleCare+
Manufacturing defects Yes, if eligible Yes, during active coverage
Standard term 1 year Depends on plan
Cracked screen from a drop No Eligible with service fee
Liquid spill No Eligible with service fee
Battery worn through normal use Generally no Covered if capacity qualifies
Priority Apple technical support Limited complimentary support Included during plan
Lost MacBook No No
Stolen MacBook No No
Data recovery No No
Apple Authorized Service Provider access Yes for eligible service Yes for eligible service

Apple's current Mac repair and AppleCare documents support these distinctions.

Do You Need AppleCare+ for Warranty Repair?

No. This is another common misunderstanding. You do not have to purchase AppleCare+ in order to receive eligible warranty service during Apple's standard limited warranty period.

If your Mac develops a qualifying manufacturing defect while covered by the Apple Limited Warranty, it can still be eligible for warranty service. AppleCare+ adds coverage and extends protection—it does not create the original manufacturer's warranty.

Can You Use Either Coverage at an Apple Authorized Service Provider?

Yes, for eligible service. Apple's current AppleCare+ terms explicitly list carry-in service through Apple retail locations or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. That means you don't necessarily need to travel to an Apple Store.

This is especially useful here in Hampton Roads. Computer Concepts is an Apple Authorized Service Provider, so we can help verify coverage and determine the appropriate service path.

Apple Authorized Service vs. Independent Repair

The type of repair provider matters. With eligible Apple warranty or AppleCare+ service, using an Apple Authorized Service Provider helps ensure the repair follows Apple's service procedures and uses genuine Apple parts where applicable.

Apple also notes that installation of third-party parts may affect AppleCare+ coverage. That's worth understanding before choosing a repair solely based on the lowest advertised price.

Does AppleCare+ Cover Cosmetic Damage?

Not simply because you don't like a scratch. Apple's current terms exclude normal wear and tear and cosmetic damage that doesn't affect functionality. A small cosmetic scratch isn't automatically an AppleCare+ repair. Functional accidental damage is the key distinction.

Does AppleCare+ Cover a Lost MacBook?

No. Current AppleCare+ for Mac terms specifically exclude lost or stolen covered equipment. If loss or theft protection matters to you, consider checking your:

  • Homeowners insurance
  • Renters insurance
  • Business insurance
  • Other applicable insurance coverage

And make sure Find My is enabled.

Does AppleCare+ Cover Water Damage?

Eligible accidental liquid damage can be covered. Apple specifically identifies liquid contact from spills as an example of accidental damage from handling under the current plan. However, exclusions still apply, including certain excessive or intentional damage.

For example, an accidental coffee spill is very different from intentionally submerging the MacBook.

Does AppleCare+ Cover a Cracked Screen?

Eligible accidental screen damage can be covered. For most current Mac models in the U.S., qualifying screen-only accidental damage currently carries a $99 service fee plus tax. If the Mac has additional damage, the repair may fall into the higher service-fee category.

What If My MacBook Has a Problem but I Don't Know What Caused It?

That's where diagnostics come in. Don't assume: “It's covered.” And don't assume: “It's not covered.” An Apple Authorized technician can inspect the Mac and help determine whether the problem appears to be:

  • A warranty issue
  • An AppleCare+ accidental-damage case
  • Battery service
  • Out-of-warranty service
  • Something else entirely

Diagnosis first. Coverage determination second.

Your AppleCare+ Purchase Date Matters

This is especially important in 2026.  Apple's U.S. Mac AppleCare+ terms have changed multiple times, and Apple maintains different terms based on when the plan was purchased. Its legal page currently lists separate Mac terms for plans purchased since August 25, 2026, July 15–August 24, 2026, March 4–July 14, 2026, and earlier periods.

So if you purchased AppleCare+ previously, don't automatically assume today's terms are identical to yours. Check the terms connected to your actual plan.

AppleCare+ vs. Limited Warranty: Which One Do You Need?

The better question may be: How much risk are you comfortable carrying yourself? The Apple Limited Warranty already gives you protection from eligible manufacturing issues during its warranty period. AppleCare+ becomes more attractive if:

  • You travel with your MacBook
  • You're a student
  • You use it for business
  • Your MacBook is expensive
  • You work around food or drinks
  • Accidental damage would create a painful repair bill
  • You want longer hardware support
  • You value qualifying battery service

For a MacBook that spends its life safely on a desk, you may evaluate the risk differently.

Our Simple Explanation

Here's the easiest way to remember the difference: Apple Limited Warranty: “Something was wrong with the Mac.” AppleCare+: “Something happened to the Mac.”

That's simplified, of course, but it captures the biggest difference. A failed component from a covered manufacturing defect and a screen cracked because the Mac hit the floor are two completely different service situations.
